In 1861, brothers Joseph and Lyman G. Bloomingdale, opened the Ladies’ Notions Shop, a store focused on hoop skirts, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. They were the sons of a Bavarian-born salesman named Benjamin Bloomingdale, who lived in Kansas and North Carolina before settling down in New York. The Bloomingdale brothers’ business was a success, and soon, they would open the East Side Bazaar, broadening their product selection and moving to 938 Third Ave. In 1886, they grew again, moving uptown, and eventually, the store took up a whole city block.
