Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street is the heart of the Financial District and a piece of living history where billions of dollars in stocks are traded each day. When people think of stocks, bankers, and brokers, their mind likely jumps to Wall Street. Though Wall Street NYSE tours are no longer offered to the public, tourists crowd the columned façade outside for the perfect stock exchange photo op.

You can find the New York Stock Exchange, or NYSE, at 11 Wall Street in Lower Manhattan. Some call the building the “Big Board,” named for the world-famous stock tracker that hangs over the floor. This building is a National Historic Landmark and claims the title of the world’s largest stock exchange.

The NYSE opening bell is rung at 9:30 am Eastern time to mark the start of each day’s trading. There are four bells located throughout the NYSE that simultaneously ring when the control button is pressed. The buttons that get the bells ringing are behind the podium that’s on the trading floor. A green button rings the opening and closing bells, a yellow button rings a single bell that calls for silence, and a red button is a backup in case the green button isn’t working. The trading day ends when the green button is pressed and the bells ring at 4 pm Eastern time.

What to See on Wall Street: Other Attractions

There are plenty of things to see in the Wall Street area, even though tourists are no longer able to take a New York Wall Street tour. NYC visitors can admire beautiful architecture from the Gilded Age, then visit famous historical locations like Federal Hall and Trinity Church. If you want to learn more about finance and history, the Museum of American Finance should be at the top of your list of things to see on Wall Street.

Can You Visit the NY Stock Exchange?

Wall Street NYSE tours of the trading floor are unavailable due to security concerns. Visitors, however, can take photos of the outside of the building.
