What to Visit in Harlem on Your New York Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour
If you are taking a New York hop on hop off bus tour, you must consider a trip to Harlem. You may not be familiar with all the different sights you can visit while in the area, so here are a few you must see.
Studio Museum of Harlem
The museum first opened in 1968. It is focused on the work of international, national, and local artists of African descent, in addition to the art that is inspired by black culture. It is open from Thursday through Sunday, and $7 is the suggested admission.
Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine
Don’t forget to make a visit to the largest church in the U.S. Not only is it the largest, it is also well known for being incomplete, with more than a hundred years of construction under its belt. You can enjoy a Gothic nave, and Romanesque sanctuary and choir. Construction started in 1891 for this house of prayer and welcoming to people of “all nations.” You can enjoy a tour to learn more about its interesting architecture and history.
Levain Bakery
Two best friends founded the bakery in 1994. It is now famous across the world for the delicious walnut chocolate chip cookies. The name comes from the French word levain, after the leavening agents for baking. Be sure to try favorites like the banana chocolate chip bread, oatmeal raisin cookies, and fresh baguettes.
Apollo Theater
This concert hall is world-famous for introducing such legends as the James Brown and the Jackson Five. The theater now sees about 1.3 million visitors every year. It was built in 1914 and started as burlesque for “whites only.” It is now known for Amateur Night, where talented performers and singers come in hopes of becoming a star.
Red Rooster Harlem
If you are looking for an award-winning meal, chef Marcus Samuelsson will deliver some delicious Southern food right here in Harlem. He has made many appearances on Food Network. He also has also been on “Chef Masters.” Don’t forget to try some chicken and waffles or cornbread while here. The sweet potato doughnuts are also a favorite among clients.
Abyssinian Baptist Church
A visit to Harlem during a New York hop on hop off bus tour wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the first African-American Baptist Church. First opened in Manhattan in 1808, it moved to Harlem in 1923 with minister Dr. Adam Clayton Powell. It is a very popular tourist destination. So, be sure to check out the times you can visit before heading over.
