The High Line
Location: According to Wikipedia, the park runs from Gansevoort Street – three blocks below 14th Street – in the Meatpacking District, through Chelsea, to the northern edge of the West Side Yard on 34th Street near the Javits Center.
What is the High Line anyway? A revitalized piece of New York City’s past, it’s the park that almost wasn’t! Built on a historic, elevated freight line destined for demolition, the High Line NYC has inspired millions worldwide as an example of how cities can reuse industrial spaces to create beautiful, hybrid spaces. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th and 12th Avenues and according to Trip Advisor, it is #14 of 1,200 things to do in NYC! The best way to experience the High Line New York is to wander around and just get lost in your surroundings, but if you’re looking for suggestions, here are some of our favorite spots:
- Tiffany and Co. Foundation Overlook - offering views of the Meatpacking District and the Whitney Museum of American Art. (at Gansevoort St.)
- Diller – von Furstenberg Sundeck & Water Feature - catch a sunset from our lounge chairs or dip your toes into our famed water feature. (between 14th and 15th Streets)
- Chelsea Market Passage - where the action is. This passage features art, public programs, and our open-air food court. (between 15th and 16th Streets)
- Northern Spur Preserve - see what the High Line looked like before it became a park. This spur gives a glimpse back to our roots. (at 16th St.)
- Tenth Avenue Square - This unique amphitheater offers views of 10th Ave., the Hudson River and the Statue of Liberty (at 17th St.)
- Chelsea Thicket - wind your way through a miniature forest of lush dogwoods, bottlebrush buckeye, hollies, and other dense shrubs. (between 21st and 22nd Streets)
- Philip A. & Lisa Maria Falcone Flyover - this three-block-long boardwalk takes you through a canopy of big leaf magnolia, aromatic sassafras and more. (between 25th and 27th Streets)
- The Rail Yards - complete with 360° views of the Hudson River, Midtown skyscrapers, and the West Side rail yards. (between 30th and 34th Streets)
Things to Explore at the High Line:
Horticulture: The High Line Park has plantings that were inspired by the self-seeded landscape that grew for 25 years on the neglected rail tracks. Legendary Planting Designer Piet Oudolf chose species of perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees for their hardiness, sustainability, texture and color variation, with a focus on native species.
Free Programs: Friends of the High Line NYC creates fun and innovative opportunities for kids, families, and people of all ages to experience the High Line in new ways. Join us for tours, performances, live music, dance, well-being activities and more.
Art: High Line Art commissions and produces 30+ public art projects each year, including site-specific commissions, exhibitions, performances and video programs.
Food: Vendors featuring a wide variety of cuisines are located in the Chelsea Market Passage between 15th St. and 16th Streets. Food carts are also located at Gansevoort St., 22nd St., and 30th St.
Shop: Get exclusive apparel and gifts designed to celebrate New York’s park in the sky. Available in the Chelsea Market Passage at 16th St. Bonus: Become a High Line Spike Member and save 20% on your first purchase!
